Apologies for not putting an article up last week. I was busy with my school reports. Now that they're done I have fired up a fresh article. This week I have focused on a backman. Purely because if I just went for the PODs with best averages I would be going through midfielder after midfielder. It is only fair as coaches finish off their different positions, that I consider forwards, rucks and defenders as well! Enjoy.
Lynden Dunn (MELB)
WHY?
In you look at my preseason PODs I suggested Dunn was good value for his price, despite his best average only being 82. Well, he has exceeded that, jumping 15 points per game in 2014. He has averaged 137 over the last 3 games and 113 over the last 5. What I noticed is that in those last two games where he scored 140+ was that they were the only two games where he has had at least 20 kicks. He also had at least 10 marks in each of the last 2 rounds. Why has his average increased so much this year? Because two very important stats have risen: He is averaging (per game) 19.5 disposals (+3.5) and 7.2 marks (+3.5). Every other stats is around the same, except tackles which are down slightly. But if those extra 3.5 disposals are effective and in a score chain and the marks are contested and important then it is worth quite a bit in SuperCoach terms. What is also worth noting is that Dunn is 2nd in the AFL for rebound 50s, 7th in the AFL for marks and 7th in time on ground percentage in the AFL.
HIS SCORING...
As I mentioned, he is averaging 98 for the year, 113 in the past 5 games and 137 in the last 3 matches. High scores of 144 and 149 have come in the past 2 rounds and he scored 133 in Round 6. Outside of thise big scores he has only had two sub 70 scores; 68 in Round 4 versus Carlton and 56 in Round 7 versus Adelaide. I cannot pinpoint reasons for the poor score against Carlton as he had 16 disposals (15 kicks), 11 marks and kicked 1.2. I would suggest ineffectiveness. Against Adelaide he had 17 disposals but only 4 marks. Again, ineffectiveness may have cause the low score. Let's push those scores aside though! Outside of the highs and lows he has had 3 games in the 70s, 1 in the 80s, 1 in the 90s and 2 in the 100s. Hence why he is an excellent POD option; low scores are few and far between. It is a bit tough paying 522k for someone that throws a 70-80 in every now and then though (which is why grabbing him for 444k was value), but when he also goes huge it is worth the risk in terms of an overall season average.
NEXT 5....
In his next 5 games he plays North Melbourne, Bulldogs, Fremantle, Geelong & Port Adelaide. Not an easy run for The Dees, but Dunn's highest score against each side is 113, 86, 119, 109 & 116. When you look at those scores and then consider that Dunn is easily in his best year so far, it is very tempting.

IF....
....you're wanting to finish off your mids I'd be taking Adam Treloar (av 114 - $559,500 - 3.63%)
....you're wanting to grab a ruck POD it is hard to look past Patrick Ryder (av 98 - $497,100 - 3.13%)
....you're wanting to complete your forward line then Cyril Rioli (av 94 - $442,300 - 3.16%) would be a solid option.
