As we approach the end of the season I am going to highlight one POD from each area, rather than the best one. It will be less in depth but cover more players. This will help coaches who are finishing off their sides - either upgrading rookies, trading out injured players or bettering their sides where possible - by allowing everyone access to a POD from each position. I've highlighted an interesting point or something that stands out for each player.
Paul Duffield (FREO) - Defender
- Worth $532,700
- Averaging 92 per game
- Selected in 2.87% of sides (7,153)
Duffield was a superstar SuperCoach defender in 2009, averaging 97. Since then his yearly averages have been very up and down: 91, 76, 93 & 80. His first nine rounds of 2014 included some tons and also some poor scores between 40-80. He would've been a bargain at his lowest point where he was averaging 77 and cost only $395,000. His current price, although a tad expensive, is worthy of his recent form. Since Fremantle's bye Duffield has scored 109, 130, 102, 114, 132 & 87. He's averaged 113 over his last 5 rounds.
Callan Ward (GWS) - Midfielder
- Worth $592,400
- Averaging 114 per game
- Selected in 6.27% of sides (15,611)
Cal Ward is a borderline POD. Being in under 5% of sides is a real point of difference but under 10% is still a bit of an x-factor when you consider players like Sandilands, Dangerfield, Pendles and other guns are selected in over 50% of teams. Ward's scoring this year has been exceptional. Aside from a poor game in Round Four, when he scored 48, his only other scores below 100 are 92 (Round Three) and 93 (Round Sixteen). On the flipside, of the twelve 100+ scores he's produced, eight have been over 120 and his two highest are over 140. A lot of coaches will have finished off their midfields, but with Ablett out Ward should definitely be on your radar.
Matthew Lobbe (PORT) - Ruckman
- Worth $545,400
- Averaging 98 per game
- Selected in 4.90% of sides (12,189)
Lobbe was all in plenty of sides during the pre-season and was spoken about lots within the SuperCoach community. He failed to deliver... early on. During the first five rounds of the year he produced his 4 lowest scores and averaged a measly 78. In the nine rounds following that he has scored one 80, four 90s and four tons. He seems to be a forgotten man despite averaging 120 over the last fives rounds (with high scores of 145 & 150 in that average). Your rucks are most likely complete but he is one to keep an eye in if your ruckman gets injured or has a dramatic form drop.
Stephen Motlop (GEEL) - Forward
- Worth $452,700
- Averaging 81 per game
- Selected in 1.53% of sides (3,817)
Motlop came back in Round Seven from injury and his season has really been a tale of two halves. His first five games he only had over 20 disposals in a game once and only provided 3.2 on the scoreboard. This saw him with scores of 67, 55, 72, 32 & 61 between Rounds 7-12. Obviously his fitness improved, which saw him above 20 disposals every game for the next four rounds while adding 6.5 to the scoreboard. His scoring from round 13-16 was 112, 105, 98 & 124. In short: he averaged 57.4 for the first five games after a comeback from injury and averaged 109.8 over the next four.
