Just an average week of selections in what was an average week of SC – Barlow gave us 90, Goldstein 105 and Stevie J 91. Bland and dull results there. Obviously with Gazza back into most sides this weekend the choice will be fairly simple, but we’ll still have a crack at some unique options that might be worth looking at.

Most scribes would agree that the 2012 AFL season is one of the most open for years.
In the recent past teams such as Geelong, Collingwood, St Kilda and the Bulldogs were almost guaranteed to fill up the top four spots, with the odd exception thrown in here and there. There was always a couple of stand-out teams who were flag favourites from early on in the season, and usually one of those took out the Grand Final at season’s end. Everything pretty much went according to plan. 2012 has a completely different feel about it though. Whilst Collingwood, West Coast, Adelaide and Hawthorn seem to be the front runners, there are at least another 6 teams who legitimately feel that have a crack at the title this year, depending on how the remainder of the year pans out. Don’t you love it when the best players in any given sport perform at their peak, showing why they are the best? Gazza came to the party last weekend, belting out a massive 188 pts against the Kangaroos. WOW. In comparison, our selections looked dismal – 78 from Brown, 111 from Cross and 104 from Wells. Nevertheless, we continue to fight the fight for the little guy, and will do our best to come up with a left-field captain this week who can go somewhere toward covering the huge hole left in your SC side with Gazza having a bye this weekend. Here goes…
1. Michael BARLOW Fremantle Much to the disappointment of those who had Gazza as captain (me included), we finally had a little bit of success with Captain Courageous last round. We warned everyone about Gazza’s poor record against the Saints, and it was proven again – this time even without the Clint JONES tag. Our selections went relatively well – 112 from Nick Dal, 99 from Pav (including 6 goals), and a nice 125 from Cyril (with 14 tackles). Any of those would’ve been nice in place of GAJ’s whopping 64 pts from 20 disposals. Will the little master bounce back this weekend, or can we tempt you again with a left-field captain choice?
1. Jonathan BROWN Brisbane Lions Given the results of last weekend to the two superstars in GAJ and Buddy, this article would seem a bit pointless wouldn’t it? Well, when you scratch a little bit deeper, maybe not. We all know how unpredictable Buddy is – selecting him as captain in any round is always fraught with danger. And as for Gaz, this week they take on the Saints – and he will wear the Clint Jones tag again. He only has an average of 110 against the Saints, despite an average this year of 142. Is it worth considering someone else – particularly in these bye rounds, when the correct choice could make all the difference?
