In a perfect world, we should only be focusing on upgrading and downgrading during the byes. I mean, with six teams missing each round, it’s hard enough as it is, right?
Unfortunately though, our forwards always have different ideas. Every year it’s the toughest position to nail. We’ve either got undisciplined acts like Roughy and Chappy, or a reoccurrence of an injury, like Rioli, reminding us to never pick him again.
But, what to do with these popular selections?
Jarryd Roughead - Roughy is owned by 60,000 coaches, and is one of the most selected forwards. However, bumping former team-mate Ben McGlynn has put his post in jeopardy - be careful Roughy.
With the bye this week, his one mate suspension will see him miss the crucial clash with Port Adelaide. That means by holding him, you’d have to have a replacement for two weeks.
Verdict - I’d HOLD on Roughead. When he returns in Round 11, he’s got GWS, whom he averages 128 against. Then, in a fortnight, he’s got Carlton, whom he averages 110 against.
And, while he’s been up and down this season, he has scored 90 or above in five of the eight matches. That’s a pretty good conversion for a forward.
If you decide to trade him, Dave has the best options across in Trade Winds.

Paul Chapman - Chappy, Chappy, Chappy. It’s good to see that a change of colours hasn’t changed your hot-head mentality. A stray elbow on Jack Redden means he’ll sit out Round 9, which heads into the Bombers’ Round 10 bye. So it’s a fortnight break for Chappy.
Verdict - So Paul, but it’s no Happy Chappy for you - I’d TRADE.
According to Bomber, Chapman was never going to play the whole season anyway, which made him a risky pick in the first place. Despite his consistency, I’d seriously think about offloading him as it’s inevitable that he’ll have another ‘rest’ down the track, and most likely when your team most needs him. There are heaps of options - check outTrade Winds for the best options.
Cyril Rioli - Four to six weeks. It’s not the estimated shipping date on the Ab Circle Pro, but rather Cyril’s diagnosis. Just when he was looking good too…
Verdict - Remind me to never pick Rioli again. He sucks me in every year though, such is his charm - maybe I’ll have to speak to Bruce about that.
Play it by ear on Cyril. If you have 18+ playing this week, think about HOLDING him. His price (a pleasant $507,400) won’t fall if he’s not playing, and it means you can cash in on the Round 9 bye players if you hold off a week. And to be honest, they have a few more forwards worth looking at.
However, if you can’t field a full squad this week, then you have to TRADE Rioli, as he’s too expensive to be sitting idle when your squad is in desperate need.
May God have mercy on your soul if you're one of the few who have all three. That’s got to hurt.
