Geelong v Collingwood
The Lowdown -
The Cats prevailed in a tight opener to the year, with Jordan Schroder kicking the winner to see Geelong up by 2 points. The key forwards stole the show with Tom Hawkins slotting four goals and Jesse White bagging five.
SuperCoach relevant -
Hard to go past Dayne Beams ($497k) as the most relevant, picking up 32 touches and locking himself in everyone’s midfield. Scott Pendlebury ($683k) and Steve Johnson ($625k) shone as usual and Matty Stokes ($525k) put his hand up as a midfield POD with 39 touches.
From the clouds -
Lincoln McCarthy ($123k) only got eight touches but laid six tackles in a solid first-up display. He’s looking good for round one and is selectable as a forward. Billie Smedts ($290k) and Marley Williams ($404k) both played roles out of defence for their respective sides and both gathered 15 touches each, definitely watch those two young guns.

Hawthorn v Brisbane The Lowdown - This one was all Hawthorn. In one of the biggest preseason wins in a while, Brisbane kicked only three goals while the Hawks packed on 154 points. Jack Gunston ($447k) kicked five goals while Sam Mitchell ($562k) got 33 touches. |

SuperCoach relevant -
Mitchell as a defender looks like a must-have. The top ten SC scorers were all wearing brown and gold, including guys to consider including Ben McEvoy ($503k), Cyril Rioli ($476k) and Luke Bruest ($444k). Matthew Suckling ($312k) returned successfully from his knee reconstruction with 19 touches and 70 SC points.
From the clouds -
Brisbane’s top draftee James Aish ($187k) looked okay in patches and got a respectable 53 SC points. Hawk Mitch Hallahan ($123k) did his bit by laying nine tackles and securing 72 SC points himself.

Richmond v Melbourne
The Lowdown -
A tight arm-wrestle eventually fell the way of the Demons as the Red and Blue overran the Tigers in the final quarter. Melbourne crushed Richmond in possession and deserved their first win of 2014.
SuperCoach relevant -
All of a sudden there’s a lot to like for the Demons! Jack Trengove ($404k) relished no captaincy duties while I believe Nathan Jones ($485k) will benefit from it. New recruit Bernie Vince ($424k) also grabbed 32 touches - all of the three listed above scored more than 100 SC points. For Richmond Brett Deledio ($558k) and Bachar Houli ($493k) are shaping as POD premiums, with 122 and 91 SC points respectively; consider if you are feeling unique.
From the clouds -
Viv Michie ($172k) got 19 touches (from only 58% time on ground) and 86 SC points, while the excitement machine Jay Kennedy-Harris ($117k) slotted three goals and finished with 99 SC points.
North Melbourne v Carlton
The Lowdown -
The two sides clashed in Ballarat minus Dale Thomas, but an Andrejs Everitt ($342k) burst sparked a Blues win; despite impressive displays from Drew Petrie ($554k) (four goals) and Jack Ziebell ($513k) (29 disposals, 12 tackles).
SuperCoach relevant -
All SC eyes were on North’s two biggest off-season recruits in Luke McDonald ($182k) and Nick Dal Santo ($525k), and both impressed. McDonald gathered 20 in 67% game time for 61 SC points, while Dal Santo was at his best, with 28 disposals at more than 80% efficiency and 102 SC points. Marc Murphy ($498k) didn’t set the world on fire, but he managed 17 touches in 77% game time for 59 SC points.
From the clouds -
15 disposals for bargain mid Dylan Buckley ($133k) is certainly something to look into, and Tom Bell ($311k) impressed many, he finished with six clearances, eight tackles and two goals. The in-and-under midfielder Carlton have been after? Joel Tippett ($123k) won’t score prolifically, but with more performances like keeping Jared Waite goalless, and senior footy could come his way.

Adelaide v Port Adelaide
The Lowdown -
The Crows - through boom recruits Eddie Betts ($362k) and James Podsiadly ($411k) - burst out of the blocks and never looked back. The top five SuperCoach scorers were all from Adelaide, led by Matthew Wright ($384k), who gathered 35 touches and recorded seven clearances.
SuperCoach relevant -
As a MID/FWD Dual Position Player, Wright could become very relevant this season if he isn’t given tagging jobs as he was last year. Jared Polec ($172k) has made a successful transition from Brisbane gathering 20 touches from just 69% game time.
From the clouds -
Cameron Ellis-Yolmen (123k) was fairly impressive with 18 touches and 70 SC points. Matt Crouch is another ($117k) is another midfield rookie who’s going to be popular; he looked comfortable and amassed 95 SC points.
