Another round of footy behind us, another list of injuries and suspensions that will play heavily on the minds of all the SC coaches unfortunate enough to have one or two of them. We’re right in the guts of the season and wins are just as important now as later on down the track – who will you keep and who will you cull?
Jobe WATSON (Essendon. Value - $512,900. Hamstring injury – 3 to 4 weeks)
WATSON is a midfield gun, there is no doubt about that, and this season he has stepped it up another notch, averaging 116 pts per game for the 17% of coaches who have selected him. A nice return, but a big decision has to now be made. Out for 3 to 4 weeks (including a bye) with a hammy strain, and remembering that Essendon have a bye on SC Grand Final weekend, do you need to move him out?
Possibilities : Nick Dal SANTO (StK) - $510,300 Av 109
Marc MURPHY (Carl) - $503,700 Av 109
Ryan GRIFFEN (Bull) - $497,000 Av 112
My Choice – Breakout year
Jimmy BARTEL (Gee) - $495,800 Av 114
Paul CHAPMAN (Gee) - $495,100 Av 102
Nathan FYFE (Freo) - $484,900 Av 112
Scott THOMPSON (Adel) - $475,300 Av 113
Value Pick – Very consistent.
David HALE (Hawthorn. Value - $230,100. Knee injury, out for 6 weeks)
After transferring across from the Kangaroos, 9% of coaches obviously thought Hale would be the answer as a second ruckman – or an expensive benchwarmer. His season hasn’t exactly been a success, averaging just 52 pts per game and dropping $22,100 for the year to date. With a knee injury now sidelining him for up to two months, you have no choice – get him out.
Possibilities : James SELLAR (Adel) - $194,600 Av 55
Broc McCAULEY (Bris) - $138,600 Av 61
Max BAILEY (Haw) - $110,200 Av 0 Worth a shot due to Hawks injuries?
(My choice and Value Pick – get some extra cash and trade HALE up to Tyrone VICKERY, Zac SMITH or Mitch CLARK, with SMITH being the best choice of the three and only $63,000 more than HALE)
Adam McPHEE (Fremantle. Value $266,200. Knee injury, out 8 weeks)
The Freo injury curse continues, this time McPHEE copping the brunt of it and being ruled out for the next 8 weeks. In 3% of teams, McPHEE has been poor this season, averaging just 58 pts per game and dropping $48,700. Available as a defender or midfielder, his replacements are not great but two months is too long to hold on.
Defender Possibilities : Sean DEMPSTER (StK) - $264,500 Av 58
Luke THOMPSON (Adel) - $264,300 Av 77
Chris TARRANT (Coll) - $262,300 Av 58
Michael HIBBERD (Ess) - $103,600 Av 62
Paul PUOPOLO (Haw) - $103,600 Av63
My Choice and Value Pick – Job Security
Midfield Possibilities : Shane SAVAGE (Haw) - $264,300 Av 76 My Choice – on fire
Jack STEVEN (StK) - $264,000 Av 56
Jordan GYSBERTS (Melb) - $263,100 Av 77
Michael HIBBERD (Ess) - $103,600 Av 62
Value Pick if named again
Tendai MZUNGU (Freo) - $103,600 Av 0
Heath HOCKING (Essendon. Value - $360,700. Suspended three weeks)
A stray elbow sees HOCKING, one of the Bombers improving players this season, out for 3 weeks. Averaging 84 pts but only in 1% of teams, owners face the choice of trading of benching the midfielder, with 3 weeks being the awkward amount –do you put up with it or use another trade? Trade, I say.
Possibilities - Sean GRIGG (Rich) - $356,700 Av 84
Callan WARD (Bull) - $347,700 Av 85
Brent REILLY (Adel) - $343,000 Av 84
Liam SHIELS (Haw) - $337,300 Av 85
Luke SHUEY (WCE) - $332,800 Av 82
My Choice – Like his style
Tom LIBERATORE (Bull) - $304,300 Av 91
Value Pick – Can play
Stephen GILHAM (Hawthorn. Value - $245,100. Season ending knee injury)
Another big Hawk to go down early last weekend, GILHAM is facing a knee reco and will be out for the remainder of season 2011. Picked in just under 1% of SC teams, despite playing a pivotal role for the Hawks GILHAM has averaged just 49 pts per game, dropping $94,000 in cash. That hurts.
Possibilities : Sam REID (Syd) - $242,700 Av 56
Brendan WHITECROSS (Haw) - $241,500 Av 54
Joel PATFULL (Bris) - $236,700 Av 53
Michael PETTIGREW (Port) - $235,300 Av 65
Michael HIBBERD (Ess) - $103,600 Av 62
Paul PUOPOLO (Haw) - $103,600 Av 63 My Choice and Value Pick – Will play
Keep an eye on those rookies who might be on the cusp of going up in value – and also watch out in the coming weeks for popular pre-season selections returning from injury in Tendai MZUNGU and Ian CALLINAN. Most importantly though, keep an eye on how many trades you have left – remember, we are only one third of the way through the year!
