Welcome to the first edition of Trade Winds, a weekly column where I will scrutinize those players who, - though suspension, injury or just poor form - need to be replaced in your SC teams. With round one behind us, I didn’t think there would be too much to look at – how wrong I was! There are significant injuries galore, and those listed below are the main men to move on – and who you should look at replacing them with. (Note : I have left out Adelaide players as possible replacements due to their bye this week)
Jonathan BROWN (Brisbane. Value - 475,300. Out for up to 12 weeks with major facial injuries)
Ouch. Didn’t this one hurt. Browny was showing some good form too, before getting absolutely smashed by Luke McPharlins knee. The risk on the big colossus hasn’t paid off, and with an injury like that, he just has to be moved on.
Possibilities : Cyril RIOLI (Haw) - $461,500 (117 pts round 1)
Jack RIEWOLDT (Rich) - $449,400 (112 pts round 1)
Ryan O’KEEFE (Syd) - $440,200 (141 pts round 1)
My Choice – Back in town!
Colin SYLVIA (Melb) - $428,200 (114 pts in round 1)
Chris DAWES (Coll) - $364,600 (140 pts in round 1)
Value Pick
Mark LeCRAS (West Coast. Value - $399,900. Out for 10 weeks or more with groin injury)
Did you see this incident? How innocuous get it be? I thought he was joking for a minute, but clearly that wasn’t the case. The Eagle goalsneak is gone for a large chunk of the season, and the real quality replacements for him are few and far between.
Possibilities : Leroy JETTA (Ess) - $378,700 (93 pts in round 1) MPP
Chris DAWES (Coll) - $364,600 (140 pts in round 1)
Nathan FYFE (Freo) - $353,100 (117 pts in round 1) MPP My Choice – absolute quality
Quinten LYNCH (WCE) - $314,200 (98 pts in round 1)
Michael WALTERS (Freo) - $222,500 (96 pts in round 1)
Value Pick
Rory SLOANE (Adelaide. Value - $366,000. Out for 6 weeks with jaw and thumb issues)
This Adelaide excitement machine was on a lot of SC radars this season, and rightly so. He showed some real promise in round one, scoring 90 points – until it all came crashing down. Surgery on his jaw and his thumb will see him out for a while – too long to hold on to.
Possibilities : Liam ANTHONY (Nth) - $362,900 (73 pts in round 1)
My Choice – about to explode
Nathan FYFE (Freo) - $353,100 (117 pts in round 1) MPP
Nathan JONES (Melb) - $346,600 (119 pts in round 1)
Clinton YOUNG (Haw) - $310,800 (105 pts in round 1)
Value Pick
Easton WOOD (Bulldogs. Value - $255,700. Out for 6 to 8 weeks with an ankle injury)
Another up-and-comer who was on a lot of coaches lists, this was seen as a breakout year for WOOD – the dashing defender from the Western Oval. Unfortunately he only managed 60 pts in round 1 before going down with a serious ankle injury that could sideline him for up to two months. Gotta go.
Possibilities : Zac DAWSON (St K) - $249,700 (78 pts in round 1)
Tom WILLIAMS (Bull) - $239,400 (66 pts in round 1)
Mark NICKOSKI (WCE) - $198,700 (113 pts in round 1)
Robbie TARRANT (Nth) - $184,900 (119 pts in round 1)
My Choice – Like his style
Cameron PEDFERSON (Nth) - $109,700 (114 pts in round 1)
Dyson HEPPELL (Ess) - $153,600 (90 pts in round 1)
Nick LOWER (Freo) - $103,600 (110 pts in round 1)
Value Pick
Jason PORPLYZIA (Adelaide. Value - $343,700. Out for a while with another shoulder reco)
Can this guy ever take a trick? The highly-skilled half forward for the Crows has done it again, popping his shoulder with the 2011 season barely even underway. It’s a disaster for him, and for the almost 10,000 SC teams who have him in their side. Don’t you just hate that?
Possibilities : David ZAHARAKIS (Ess) - $337,900 (113 pts in round 1)
My Choice – breakout year
Josh HILL (Bull) - $327,600 (101 pts in round 1)
Quinten LYNCH (WCE) - $314,200 (98 pts in round 1)
Luke TAPSCOTT (Melb) - $110,200 (113 pts in round 1)
Value Pick
That’s it for week one, in what turned out to be a major week of serious injuries to some pretty influential players. Brent STAKER and Jay SCHULZ could’ve also made the list, as could Joel SELWOOD. Let’s hope next week doesn’t trot out the same number of casualties, and we can start to attack some of those underperforming stars to think about getting rid of – or look out for?
