Is it just me, or are we alternating on a weekly basis between bad and good when it comes to players being unavailable? Round four was kind to us, meaning round five bit back – and hard. Injuries to key players and suspensions to others have left many teams in disarray coming into round 6…
Going by the selection percentages alone, the most significant result from last weekend is the two week suspension to Bulldog rookie Brett GOODES (Av. 94). Chosen in an incredible 74% of SC teams, GOODES has been one of those rare rookies who has the ability to remain a keeper. However, a
stint on the sidelines might just stretch the friendship too far. My advice – keep him if you can. With a breakeven of only 11, his value will continue to rise upon his return.

Next popular to crash and burn in round 5 was Carlton defender/midfielder Bryce GIBBS (Av. 98). Substituted after a “hammy twinge” last weekend, GIBBS is slated to return in a fortnight – but might that be a bit longer? Time will tell. If you need to move him on for team balance, as a defender look to replace him with Heath SHAW (Av 90), Jack GRIMES (Av 100) or Charlie DIXON (Av. 115). If you have him in the guts, look to Bulldog duo Adam COONEY (Av 101) or Tom LIBERATORE (Av 107), or Power youngster Chad WINGARD (Av 108).
Next cab off the rank is Freo star Nat FYFE (Av 109), who has also fallen foul of the judiciary and will miss a fortnight for kicking. FYFE has been a value pick this year, selected in 20% of teams who must now make a difficult decision to keep him or replace him. He’ll stay in my side, but if you cant carry him look to Travis BOAK (Av 112), Hamish HARTLETT (112), Steele SIDEBOTTOM (111) or Stevie JOHNSON (110) to fill the void.
One of the biggest disappointment for season 2013 is up next, with big Tex WALKER (Av 69) doing his ACL and cancelling out the rest of the year. The game will be poorer for it, but you have no choice but to move him on – and despite his drop in value, there is some quality there. Possible replacements look to be POD Jeremy HOWE (88), big Quentin LYNCH (Av 91) or silky Mark LeCRAS (Av 91). LeCRAS by a nose I reckon.
Speaking of silky skilled, Hawthorn gun Cyril RIOLI (Av 111), was yet another to rue round five, badly tearing his hamstring. RIOLI will be missing for at least 7 weeks – horrible news for the 10% of SC teams who have him. Best to fill his shoes (in both the forward or midfield roles) look to be DPP’s Stevie J (Av 110), Andrew WALKER (Av 115) or Tom ROCKLIFF (Av 105). Difficult to split those three – JOHNSON or ROCKLIFF have my vote though.
Two defender of similar value – Alan TOOVEY (Av 70) and Jared RIVERS (Av 45) – were also injured last weekend, TOOVEY gone for the year with an ACL while RIVERS is out for 4 to 6 with a knee
complaint. In 1.5% and 1.7% of teams respectively, they aren’t hugely popular but must be moved on. Not much to go with here, but look at Thomas BUGG (Av 63), Matthew JAENSCH (Av 72) or Tom MURPHY (Av 76).
Mitch CLARK, Jackson TRENGOVE and Kepler BRADLEY all also went down with serious injuries last week, however as they are selected in less than 1% of teams, we’ll leave them alone.
Ouch – thanks for nothing round five.
