There were many great players, who performed well during the 2013 AFL Season. I go through and list my top 50 players, for season 2013 and there are quite a few surprises.
Gary Ablett has been the best player of the 2013 season, edging out Joel Selwood and Scott Pendlebury. Ablett had an amazing season, winning the Brownlow medal and leading the much-improved Suns to 14th on the AFL ladder. Selwood had a big finish to the season, while Pendlebury was consistent all year. Jarryd Roughead was the best key forward in the competition by a mile, taking home the Coleman medal. Harry Taylor was rock solid down back for Geelong all year and is 6th. Even though Stevie J missed six games, he makes it into the top 10 as all of his games were quality and he stood up when it mattered for the Cats.
Big Will Minson was 12th, after dominating in the ruck all year. Jobe Watson faced a lot of criticism this year, but despite the adversity, was massive in leading the Bombers during a difficult period. Ryan Crowley was the big surprise at 17th, nullifying the league’s best midfielders. Even though he only averaged 14.8 disposals, he was hardly beaten all year.
Youngster Tom Libartore stood up this year, dominating in the Bulldogs’ midfield winning a lot of contested possessions. Premiership captain Luke Hodge had a big year after a disappointing season last year. Richard Douglas, Matthew Stokes and Chad Wingard were all big improvers in 2013 and they come in at 31st, 32nd and 33rd, respectively. Norm Smith medallist Brian Lake comes in at 35th after a big year in defence for the Hawks, while Grand final hero Jack Gunston sneaks into the top 50 after a mammoth finals series.
As usual when listing a top 50, there are some players who can be considered unlucky not to make the final cut. Apologies to Matt Priddis, Eric Mackenzie, Alex Rance, Steven Morris, Rory Sloane, Justin Westhoff, Luke McPharlin, Daniel Wells, Andrew Mackie, Pearce Hanley, Josh P. Kennedy and Chris Mayne.
