“And doesn’t that sound familiar, doesn’t that hit too close to home?
Doesn’t that make you shiver, the way things could’ve gone?
And doesn’t it feel peculiar, when everyone wants a little more
And so that I do remember to never go that far, could you leave me with a scar?”
Chief here, back for more. See those words written above? Apparently they’re from a song called ‘Scar’ from a chick called Missy Higgins. I was given them by a friend who begged me to take some time to focus this week on perhaps the biggest Supercoach enigma in the history of the game – that young lady’s name sake, Bulldog Shaun ‘Missy’ Higgins.
I read those words and they slapped me in the face like a wet fish. I suddenly wished I had received a scar from last year, or the year before. A huge, festering visible scar that reminded me EVERY DAY never to select Shaun Higgins again in my fantasy football team. Ever. Full stop. Finished. Done.

But when pre-season 2014 came around I heard the whispers, watched the hype slowly grow – yet again. Then the prices came out, and at $254,600 you suddenly appeared on my radar once more, a blip that refused to go away. The NAB Challenge started and you actually played some decent footy off the halfback line – 33 possessions in the win over Carlton if you don’t mind. Wow.
Unfortunately that was when I really jumped on board. The Bulldogs were going to make headway this year and you were going to lead the way. I was right there beside you mate, proud as punch.
What was I thinking? Couldn’t I see that I’d been down this road before? Didn’t I realise Robert Murphy wasn’t playing that day? Was love really that blind?
Well, it turns out it was. Like a late night rendezvous with an old girlfriend, I was sucked in and before I knew it I was back in the same crap situation that I’d been in before, only worse because I hadn’t learnt from my past mistakes.
Yes siree, that vital F5 spot had been taken up by you - S.Higgins from the Bulldogs. What a mistake that has already turned out to be. You’re back to your old tricks – those tricks that had worn me down before have come back to haunt me again. Round 1 against West Coast and despite amassing 23 possessions, you still only managed an ordinary 69 points. How the hell does that happen? Then, as if not to disappoint, the following week against the Kangaroos your 12 possessions led to another 68 pt performance.
HO HUM at best.
Well I’m sick to death of it Shaun! As some guy said in the movies, “I’m mad as hell and I just can’t take it anymore!” If footballers were bought from supermarkets, we’d pick you up at Aldi Higgins, fair dinkum. You look just like the real deal but when it comes down to your actual performance, it’s almost always sub par.
In 2009 you averaged 89 pts per game, including 4 games over 120 pts. It looked like you were going to be a star. Even in 2011 you averaged 83 pts per game, but you’ve never taken the next step have you? I know, I know – you’ve had a rotten luck with injuries, I get that and I sympathise with you. But this is my Supercoach team we’re talking about. The power and the glory are mine Shaun, and I am finally making a decision and putting it to print.
It’s over my friend, and this time it’s for good. I know you only have a breakeven of 5 this week, and you’ll rise a little in value but I just can’t take it. I’m done, all hope is lost.
*The Chief takes full responsibility and accepts the gratitude from those brave souls who keep Shaun Higgins in their teams this week and revel in his 120+ score.
