Best first year player: Billie Smedts – 14 matches 680 points @ 48.6. Increased $155,300
Young Smedts just pipped Orren Stephenson for this title, because other than the baby Giants, Smedts played far
more regularly than many other first year players. His scores were never massive and often he started as the substitute, but nonetheless his 50 points was very handy back-up, be it in defensive or up forward.
Most improved: Tom Hawkins - 21 matches, 1997 points @ 95.1. Increased $103,600
If his 2011 Grand Final was a sign of things to come, we should’ve expected it. Hawkins finally delivered his first full season of good scoring, averaging nearly 100 and dominating both matches against Hawthorn during the year. No reason why he couldn’t keep improving.
Best buy: James Kelly - 18 matches, 1861 points @ 103.7. Decreased $15,100
Always underrated, and often understated, but despite missing four matches of 2012, Kelly had a great 2012. Being a unique option, Kelly doesn’t receive the attention, but his contested footy and tackling means that he’ll always score well at SuperCoach. His highest score was 148, which he scored twice, proving he has the big ones in him.
Worst buy: Joel Corey - 19 matches, 1455 points @ 76.6. Decreased $192,000
It was a shocking year for the normally reliable Joel Corey and his worst SuperCoach season on record. He passed the triple-figure mark only three times and at 31 next year, looks to be firmly out of SuperCoach calculations.
2013 prospects
Daniel Menzel: So far his AFL career has been pretty well ruined by knee injuries, and for that fact he should be picked with caution. He has shown what he is capable of, and come the start of 2013, he may be a favourite for a break-out year.
Nathan Vardy: The wraps on Vardy are almost as big as him – which considering how rarely he’s played, is intriguing. McIntosh’s arrival won’t help his cause but if he shows greater versatility as a forward, he could be in a lot of sides next year.
Most prolific:
1. Joel Selwood (M) – 2353 @ 117.6
2. Steve Johnson (F) – 2028 @ 96.6
3. Paul Chapman (M/F) – 2002 @ 100.1
4. Tom Hawkins (F) – 1997 @ 95.1
5. Corey Enright (D) – 1972 @ 93.9
11. Trent West (R) – 1521 @ 76.1 (top ruckman)
