With the rest of the first round so close you can feel it, I re-started tinkering with the side a little bit. Here's what I came up with:
Max to make a Rough start?
I asked the question this morning ‘Would a Max Bailey inclusion effect Jarryd Roughead’s performance?’ The stats say otherwise: since 2010 they’ve played in 4 matches together: and Roughead has averaged an impressive 118 points per game. However, there’s a catch. David Hale didn’t play in any of those matches, in fact, all of Hale, Bailey & Roughead have never played together in the same side.
Rowe Rowe Rowe your boat
Carlton tall-man Sam Rowe seems certain to be make his debut in round one and is a necessity for your bench, be it in your ruck line or forward line. I’d suggest using him in a DPP link with Cox, Ryder or Roughead (if you’re risking it).

A Rowe-stand-out performance also throughs up another situation, let’s say Rowe plays well and scores 80 points. If he’s your ruck emergency, all off a sudden we could pick Leuenberger whether he is named or not, knowing he’ll definitely be right for round three.
Whispers of a Dwyer debut
If the VFL star Sam Dwyer gets a gig for Collingwood’s round one match – all of a sudden we’ve found another forward rookie. And that would be great – he’s as cheap as they come at $96,600. I’d find room for him quick smart. More good news from the Magpies is that Darren Jolly is fully fit – if your team is lacking POD players Jolly could be your man. As good a ruckman as there is on his day.
GAZ v JPK
I’ve heard rumours of teams opting against locking in Gary Ablett as captain this week, but going for Sydney’s Josh Kennedy (he plays GWS) instead. It would be a bold move to start the year. Shorty has a deeper look at it here in Shorty’s Skippers.
Frenchman cooked again
It has been a horror 18 months for Mark LeCras, and that’s probably an understatement. Obviously we need to replace him, but for who? I’m thinking Josh Kennedy from West Coast but there are some other options, as Dave will look at in Trade Winds later next week when trading opens.
A Dangerous way to start
Patrick Dangerfield didn’t start 2013 like he finished 2012, but there’s no cause for concern. Dean Cox, Brendon Goddard, Luke Shuey and other premiums were somewhat underwhelming in the opening matches of the season, but it’s key to remember exactly that. It’s only the first game. Remember the words of Barry – choosing premiums like a marriage; you’re committing yourself to these players because you think they’re guns. Take the occasional low and enjoy the highs.
Taylor Hine, Dan Currie debuts for North likely, while Nick Vlastuin and Troy Chaplin should start for Richmond.
Heard any other Round 1 bolters? Let me know!
