One exception might be in relation to Tiger backman Chris NEWMAN, who seems certain to miss a large chunk, if not all, of the remainder of the year. If you have him and you are eyeing a particular player off as a replacement, keep track of the potential price drops and falls and if you need to get the deal done this week, then do it. Plus, this week we look at who might have to leave your side come Finals time, and who might be suitable replacements.
Chris NEWMAN (Richmond. Value - $440,300. Strained knee ligaments. Unsure – 3 to 4 weeks?)
With the betting indiscretion involving Heath SHAW a couple of weeks back, Tiger captain NEWMAN would’ve entered a lot of SC teams as a replacement, with disastrous results. He has strained a posterior cruciate ligament and, although the Tigers are being very cagey about it (pardon the pun), it seems like he may miss a month or so. A very solid performer averaging 99 pts per game in the 19% of teams who selected him, he must be traded – taking yet another trade off the table. At this time of year, that’s gotta hurt.
Possibilities : Stefan MARTIN (Melb) - $434,600 Av 94 My Choice – Point of Difference
*Brett DELEDIO (Rich) - $426,100 Av 104
Matt SUCKLING (Haw) - $424,800 Av 96
Nathan BOCK (GC) - $419,600 Av 87
Sam FISHER (StK) - $418,900 Av 106
Grant BIRCHALL (Haw) - $415,100 Av 95 Value Pick – In Form
*Corey ENRIGHT (Geel) - $399,300 Av 95
Jonathon GRIFFIN (Fremantle. Value - $410,000. Hip injury and Sandi almost back. Week or two)
In the absence of the giant SANDILANDS, Freo second-string ruckman GRIFFIN has been a revelation, averaging 101 pts per game and rising $197,200 in cash. Nice. In 4.5% of teams, the big fella was a major trade down target, and as such his injury will affect a number of SC teams as they surge towards the Finals. With SANDI’s imminent return also on the cards, now could be the time to move him on – especially if he is your second ruckman.
Possibilities : *Robert WARNOCK (Carl) - $393,300 Av 87
Mark JAMAR (Melb) - $382,100 Av 93 My Choice and Value Pick – Can Play
*Matthew KREUZER (Carl) - $375,900 Av 88
*Patrick RYDER (Ess) - $373,200 Av 88
Ben HUDSON (Bull) - $368,900 Av 85
*David HILLE (Ess) - $367,700 Av 84
(These were the only two injuries to key players from last round. Bomber defender Tayte PEARS looks like missing a couple of weeks with a leg injury but is only in 0.5% of teams. If you are one of those minority, the best replacement trade is either Jason GRAM ($313,600 av.73) or Paul DUFFIELD ($309,300 av.80). The only other concern is big St Nick RIEWOLDT, who was given a one-week suspension in yet another baffling and quite frankly unbelievable Match Review Panel decision. It’s only one week, just hold onto him – the break might actually do him good)
Big Decisions Come Finals Time
For the first time in Supercoach history, we have to all contend with the various byes come Finals time this year. With only two weeks to go, now is the time you need to start looking forward, sorting out how many trades you have and who you might need to replace when the real games start. Of course, it comes done to individual choice – are you going to risk playing a bench player to hold on to your premium players, or are you going to trade them for another suitable premium who doesn’t have any byes? It is a big decision, but these are some of the big names you need to be making those type of decisions on.
Round 21 - Nth Melbourne. - Drew PETRIE (39% of SC teams), Andrew SWALLOW (6%), Todd GOLDSTEIN (7%), Boomer HARVEY (15%).
Round 22 – Geelong. - Paul CHAPMAN (29%), Jimmy BARTEL (17%), Corey ENRIGHT (23%), Steve JOHNSON (16%), Joel SELWOOD (12%), Brad OTTENS (5%)
Round 23 - Carlton. - Chris JUDD (39%), Marc MURPHY (12%), Heath SCOTLAND (10%), Bryce GIBBS (46%), Chris YARRAN (11%)
Round 24 - Essendon. - Dyson HEPPELL (49%), David ZAHARAKIS (7%), Patrick RYDER (10%), Jobe WATSON (6%), Michael HURLEY (13%)
Given that your team could quite possibly have 4,5 or 6 of the above named players in its lineup, the number you can move on will obviously depend on how many trades you have kept up your sleeve. If you have enough, these are the players you should be looking at bringing in to give your side that Finals zing.
Defenders - Greg BROUGHTON, Sam FISHER, Grant BIRCHALL, Stefan MARTIN, Beau WATERS.
Midfielders - Scott PENDLEBURY, Dane SWAN, Nick Dal SANTO, Leigh MONTAGNA, Matt PRIDDIS, Sam MITCHELL, Luke HODGE, Ryan GRIFFEN, Trent COTCHIN, Adam GOODES
Ruckmen - Dean COX, Shane MUMFORD, Ben McEVOY, Aaron SANDILANDS.
Forwards - Nat FYFE, Ryan O’KEEFE, Travis CLOKE, Lance FRANKLIN, Colin SYLVIA, Nick RIEWOLDT, Cyril RIOLI
Well, that’s it for this week. Hopefully you have some info to keep you thinking, even though for most of us it is simply a week to sit back and relax. Remember, if there is a particular trade you want, don’t miss out on it simply because this is a multi-bye round. Now is the time to get the team in the correct shape for a full-on tilt at premiership glory. Good luck.
