Trade Winds – 2013 Round 2
Two weeks into the AFL season and fortunately there hasn’t been too much to talk about on the injury front. The biggest of the season so far has been the round one broken arm to Mark LeCras, but there are even rumours circulating that he is a possible inclusion in the Eagles team this week against the struggling Demons – good news for those who hung on to him.
Round two saw things relatively injury-free, although there were some fringe defensive players who will be missing for the next few weeks. Despite his injury still the luckiest man in the AFL at the moment – Demon turned Cat Jared Rivers (Av.64) – has damaged his knee and will miss the next 3 to 4 matches for his new club. While not hugely popular, 2.5% of SC teams currently have Rivers, and will have to look for a replacement. The best of the bunch look to be current defensive leader in terms of SC scoring, Gold Coast POD Charlie DIXON (Av.126), courageous Saint Jarryn GEARY (Av.96), Collingwood dynamo Harry O’BRIEN (Av.95) or Bomber smooth mover David MYERS (Av. 90). For RIVER’s price, I’d take a punt on DIXON, who has been a shining light in the first fortnight of 2013.

St.Kilda duo Sean DEMPSTER (Av.71) and James GWILT (Av. 77) are also both sitting on the sidelines for the next 3 to 4 weeks, depleting further an already struggling Saints backline. Despite having his best season to date and earning All-Australian selection last year, DEMPSTER has been largely overlooked in SC circles, present in a touch under only 1% of teams. Other than the rookies who are firing (Goodes, Pittard, Stevenson) the most obvious substitutes seem to be Bomber Dyson HEPPELL (Av. 111), Freo speedster Danyle PEARCE (Av. 100) or Gold Coast’s POD Charlie DIXON (Av. 126). My choice would definitely be HEPPELL, who looks to be improving with every match.
Despite looking to take on the quarterback role at the Goddard-less Saints, GWILT too has few fans in the SC world, also present in around only 1% of teams. If you are one of the unlucky ones, look to replace him with emerging Saint teammate Dylan ROBERTON (Av.83), former Hawk now Sun Tom MURPHY (Av.79) or Irish Magpie Marty CLARKE (Av. 75). I like the look of ROBERTON so far, and in a defensive line that is losing players on a daily basis, he will certainly get plenty of game time and plenty of the ball. Get on him.
As far as looking to offload stars before their prices change, I would hold off unless you a really concerned with a premiums form – and there doesn’t seem to be too many in that boat, with most of the big names playing at least one impressive game out of the two so far. With mobile Lion Matthew LEUENBERGER back on the field last weekend and pulling out a very tidy score of 101 pts, many of you might look to get your ruck stocks back in order after he missed round one, forcing some to make some pretty drastic changes to their big men. I know he’ll be welcomed into my team this week – at that price, to paraphrase Robert Palmer, he’s simply irresistible.
See ya next week.
