Hamish HARTLETT Port Adelaide
The ever-improving Port utility Hamish HARTLETT has been steady without being spectacular
Well, a slighter better return on our choices last week, with GRIFFEN (124) and COX (139) coming up with decent scores. Unfortunately Brent HARVEY (68) put in another stinker. So, onto round 9 and, with Swanny injured, perhaps those few who don’t have Gazza are looking for a point-of-difference leader to get them a win this week - let’s see if we have the goods.

Well, did we get belted last weekend or what! Drew PETRIE (67), Ryan O’KEEFE (84) and Cyril RIOLI (48)!!!!! Wow – what a dismal bunch of scores that is. Of course, with the little genius Gazza back in play, and guys like Swan, Thompson and Stanton bringing out some hefty scores, the chance of finding some left-field captains actually worth choosing becomes very difficult – but we have never been ones to baulk at a challenge, so here goes!
Okay, let’s examine how we went in round 6 with our left-field captains. First choice was Priddis, with his lowest score for the year – 89. Nice start! Big Podsiadly chimed in with a respectable 116, while our lowest choice was a disappointing Lenny Hayes, with 87. Maybe this week we can reverse the trends and come up with a few captains who actually score 120 plus! Fingers crossed. So round 5 wasn’t the best result for us – but remember, these are left-field captains so they’re very hit and miss.
You can find a million articles on the internet telling you to pick Swan or Pendles – we’re trying to find the diamond in the rough. Last week we had Montagna (101), Wells (60) and Bartel (78). Ouch! Let’s see if we can do a little better this week…just what do the stats tell us for round 6? Seriously. What the hell is going on with this bunch of fools?
Yes, we have had some ordinary decisions by them in past seasons, but the last fortnight has absolutely taken the cake – I can’t keep my mouth shut about it any longer. Okay, so we weren’t disgraced in round 4 – Thompson 110 pts, Priddis and Brennan 104 a piece. Not spectacular, but not horrible either. Suddenly, with the great man GAJ out of action for a least a couple of weeks, this article gains a little bit more momentum – and the possibilities become a little more real. Of course, with Dane Swan already belting out a massive 180 pts, the challenge becomes to find someone who can get somewhere near that.
1. Leigh MONTAGNA (St Kilda) Working a little bit in the shadow of midfield superstars Hayes and Dal Santo, Joey Montagna Well, not the greatest weekend for us in round 3, with GODDARD the best pick of the bunch scoring 102. On the surface not too bad, but paltry compared to the great man, Gary ABLETT Jnr.. Pods tried hard for us kicking 5 goals, but still only scoring a pathetic 89 pts. Oh well, onto this week and can we find anyone who might be able to hold a flame to Gazza?
1. Matt PRIDDIS (West Coast Eagles) PRIDDIS didn’t play last weekend against the Giants, which makes me think he is rested A little bit better in round 2, particularly if you took our second option and went with Brendan GODDARD as your leader, with a tidy 147 pts against the hapless Suns – even topping Gazza’s 143 pts. As for Broughton…well, it seems like the Lyon curse has struck again. Might be time for him to go. Week three and the all important first league match-up of the year – can we find that unique captain for you this time?
1. Brendan GODDARD (St Kilda) Well, it worked last weekend and it’s worth another shot this week. Those that didn’t select Goddard in their original side would be kicking themselves now, as he belted out a lazy Okay, so we didn’t have much luck in round one with our “outsider” captains – whilst they weren’t terrible, they all scored in the 90s, which paled into comparison with some of the big scorers last weekend. The challenge is to try and find the diamond in the rough this week, and we’ve taken a little bit more conservative approach with a couple of Saints stars in their match-up with the Gold Coast at Etihad.
1. Nick DAL SANTO (St. Kilda) How on earth Dal is considered a “left field” captains choice is beyond me. Starting off with a very tidy 148 pts in round one against the Power, Dal SANTO now comes up against Welcome to a new segment for 2012 – one that we hope might give you the edge over your opponent in those big games.
“Captain Courageous” refers not to the players themselves, but to the content – you see, this is no ordinary column on who should lead your fantasy SC team each week. Instead, like a punter looking for an outsider, each week we’ll scour the SC world to find three “left field” captain choices who, for whatever reason, might be capable of a big score. You won’t see Ablett, Swan, Pendlebury or Franklin in this column – everyone knows they are captain material week in and week out. But what about the rare week they have a quite one – or they struggle against a particular team? Hopefully we can find the hidden gem that no-one else even considers. 1. Brent HARVEY (Nth Melbourne) A safe bet to start with, Boomer has been impressive against the Bombers in recent outings |
